About Chai

Chai tea, often simply referred to as "chai," is a popular and aromatic beverage that originated in India. The word "chai" translates to "tea" in Hindi, so when we say "chai tea," we are essentially saying "tea tea." Chai is a spiced tea that typically combines black tea with a blend of spices and sweeteners.

Chai is traditionally made with black tea leaves, often strong and robust varieties to stand up to the bold flavors of the spices. Assam and Ceylon teas are commonly used for their robust profiles.

The hallmark of chai is its spice blend, which includes a combination of Black Tea, Black Peppercorns, Cardamom Seeds, Ginger Root, Orange Peel, Cinnamon, Cardamom Pods, Vanilla Pods and Natural Flavouring.

Chai is often sweetened, and the choice of sweetener can vary. Sugar, honey, or condensed milk are common additions, providing sweetness that balances the spices.

Chai is typically brewed with milk, creating a creamy and rich texture. The ratio of tea to milk can vary based on personal preference.

Chai is usually prepared by simmering the tea leaves, spices, and sweeteners in water and milk. The mixture is brought to a boil and then simmered to allow the flavours to meld.

Chai made with black tea contains caffeine, but there are also caffeine-free variations using herbal infusions or decaffeinated black tea.

Chai has cultural significance in India and is often prepared and enjoyed throughout the day. It is a symbol of hospitality and is commonly shared among friends and family.

Chai has gained popularity globally, and variations of chai can be found in many parts of the world. Chai lattes, chai blends with green tea, and chai-flavoured desserts are common examples.
