Step into the world of classic Chinese green teas with our Gunpowder tea, a renowned favourite cherished for its distinctive appearance and bold flavour profile. Crafted using traditional methods passed down through generations, Gunpowder tea undergoes a meticulous process that sets it apart from other green teas.

The journey begins with withering, steaming, and drying, followed by a unique rolling technique that transforms the leaves into tightly rolled pellets resembling gunpowder, hence the name. This meticulous rolling process not only gives the tea its iconic appearance but also helps to preserve the tea's flavour and aroma, ensuring a rich and satisfying cup every time.

Upon brewing, the tightly rolled pellets unfurl, releasing a dark-golden liquor and a tantalizingly sweet aroma that entices the senses. With each sip, you'll experience the full-bodied flavour of Gunpowder tea, marked by its robustness and refreshing quality. Delicate hints of fruit, reminiscent of apple and grape, dance on the palate, adding depth and complexity to the overall tasting experience.

Whether you're a seasoned tea enthusiast or exploring the world of green teas for the first time, our Gunpowder tea promises a journey of discovery and delight with each sip. Embrace the timeless allure of this classic Chinese tea and savour its bold flavours that have stood the test of time.

The shape isn't the only thing different about Gunpowder tea. The rolling of the leaves cause pockets of fresher green tea flavour to be preserved for longer than flat-leaf varieties, so Gunpowder ages excellently whilst still retaining those bright and refreshing green tea notes.

About Chinese Gunpowder

Chinese Gunpowder tea is a type of green tea known for its distinctive rolled leaf pellets, resembling small gunpowder pellets, hence the name.

The tea leaves are tightly rolled into small, pellet-like shapes. The rolling process helps preserve the tea's freshness and protect it from physical damage.

Chinese Gunpowder tea is traditionally produced in Zhejiang province in China. The region's climate and soil contribute to the unique characteristics of the tea.

After harvesting, the tea leaves undergo a process that includes withering, steaming or pan-firing, rolling, and drying. The rolling process is crucial for creating the characteristic pellet shape.

Chinese Gunpowder tea has a bold and slightly smoky flavor with a hint of sweetness. The tight rolling of the leaves helps preserve the tea's natural oils, contributing to its distinctive taste.

To brew Chinese Gunpowder tea, use water that is around 71–85°C (160–185°F). The pellets unfurl during steeping, releasing their flavours. The leaves can be steeped multiple times.

Green teas, including Chinese Gunpowder, are rich in antioxidants and may offer various health benefits. These antioxidants, such as catechins, are believed to contribute to overall well-being.

Like most green teas, Chinese Gunpowder tea contains moderate levels of caffeine. It provides a moderate energy boost without the higher caffeine levels found in some black teas or coffee.

The tightly rolled pellets help protect the tea from external factors, contributing to a longer shelf life compared to more loosely packed teas.

Chinese Gunpowder tea is versatile and can be enjoyed on its own or blended with other ingredients. It is often used as a base for mint tea in some North African and Middle Eastern countries.

Chinese Gunpowder tea has a long history and is considered one of the classic Chinese green teas. Its name reflects its appearance, and the tea has been traded globally for centuries.
